Waist-to-Hip Ratio

Your waist-to-hip ratio shows where your body stores fat. Abdominal fat is more strongly linked to heart disease and type 2 diabetes than fat on the hips.

How it is calculated

Ratio = waist circumference ÷ hip circumference. According to a 2008 WHO expert report, the risk of metabolic complications is substantially increased at a ratio of 0.90 or higher for men and 0.85 or higher for women, as well as with a waist circumference of 102 cm or more for men and 88 cm or more for women (increased from 94 and 80 cm).

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I measure my waist and hips?

Measure your waist halfway between your lowest rib and the top of your hip bone, and your hips around the widest part of your buttocks. Stand straight with the tape snug, not tight.

What matters more: weight or waist size?

Both numbers are helpful, but waist size is a better indicator of belly fat, which is more strongly linked to health risks.

How can I reduce my waist size?

A calorie deficit, enough protein, and regular physical activity. You cannot spot-reduce belly fat with ab workouts alone—fat is lost across the whole body.

WHO thresholds are based on data from European populations; they may be lower for Asian populations. This is not a diagnosis.
