Body Fat Calculator

Body fat percentage shows how much fat and muscle you have better than BMI does. To calculate it, you only need a tape measure: measure your neck, waist, and (for women) hips.

How it's calculated

US Navy formula (Hodgdon and Beckett, 1984). Men: 495 ÷ (1.0324 − 0.19077 × lg(waist − neck) + 0.15456 × lg(height)) − 450. Women: 495 ÷ (1.29579 − 0.35004 × lg(waist + hip − neck) + 0.221 × lg(height)) − 450. Circumferences and height in centimeters. Categories by the American Council on Exercise (ACE): for men, 2–5% is essential fat, 6–13% athletes, 14–17% fitness, 18–24% average, 25% and above is excess; for women, 10–13%, 14–20%, 21–24%, 25–31%, and 32% and above.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I measure correctly?

In the morning, before eating, using a measuring tape without pulling it tight. Neck: just below the Adam's apple; waist: at the navel for men, at the narrowest point for women; hips: around the widest part of the buttocks.

Why is body fat percentage better than BMI?

BMI only takes weight and height into account, which often overestimates fat in athletes. Body fat percentage shows your actual body composition.

How can I lower my body fat percentage?

A moderate calorie deficit, enough protein (1.6–2.2 g per 1 kg of body weight), and strength training 2–3 times a week will help you lose fat while preserving muscle.

The margin of error for this method is about 3–4%. This is not a medical diagnosis.
