Ideal Weight Calculator
There is no single “ideal” weight, but there is a range where health risks are lowest. This calculator shows your healthy range based on BMI and compares it with classic formulas.
How it is calculated
The healthy range is the weight where your body mass index (weight ÷ height² in meters) is between 18.5 and 24.9, as defined by the WHO. The Devine, Robinson, Miller, and Hamwi formulas start with a base weight for a height of 152.4 cm (5 feet) and add a fixed number of kilograms for each inch (2.54 cm) above it, with different values for men and women. These formulas were originally created to calculate medication dosages, so use the BMI range as your main guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is considered a normal weight?
According to the WHO, it is a weight where BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9. For example, for a height of 170 cm, that is roughly 53–72 kg.
Why do the formulas give different numbers?
They were developed using different groups of people and in different years. A difference of 3–6 kg between formulas is completely normal.
Is this calculation suitable for athletes?
Not really: for people with high muscle mass, BMI and these formulas overestimate “excess” weight. Body fat percentage provides a more accurate view of body composition.
BMI and formulas do not account for muscle mass, age, or body frame.
